Early Morning Workouts: Top 3 Pros, Cons and Tips

Sometimes, if a workout doesn’t happen first thing in the morning, it won’t happen at all that day.  Since we turned the clocks back for daylight savings, the early mornings seem a bit less obscene and early morning workouts seem a bit more doable.  Here are the Top 3 Pros and Cons of Early Morning Workout

Pros:

1.) Connect with your habitat.  If your  workout is outdoors, there is a good chance you’ll come across some local wildlife.  Here’s a picture of a deer having breakfast that I took while on an early morning run this week.  I saw at least half a dozen deer and countless squirrels on this run.  I was like Snow White in the woods.

Maybe the wildlife on your run are  delivery trucks, kids waiting for school buses or street cleaners.  Regardless if your local wildlife is two or four-legged, they’re all good reminders that we’re connected to a larger community.

2.  Only Workout Warriors at the Gym.  Do you get annoyed by people who waste time at the gym?   Trust me, at 5 am, the people at the gym mean business.  No one wants to chat or socialize.  We haven’t even brushed our teeth yet.

3.  Change your perspective for the entire day.  Most days, I wake up with an endless to-do list that needs to be addressed immediately.  I wake up already stressed about getting myself and 3 kids cleaned, dressed, fed and out the door by 7am with lunches, bags, shoes and jackets.  Starting the day feeling rushed and barking orders is a terrible way to start the day.

Working out before the chaos of the day erupts puts me into an entirely different state of mind.  I can clear my mind, prepare mentally for the day, do some meditation and prayer before I even speak to another human being.  I feel healthier and tend to make healthier choices throughout the day.   Photos never fully capture a sunrise, but here’s a shot from my run this morning.  What a great reminder that each day is a fresh start, full of possibilities!

Cons:

1.) My bed is pretty darn cozy.  Yes, it’s hard to convince myself to give up the comfort of my warm, soft, cozy bed.

Tip:  I actually sleep in full workout gear (no sneakers).  I literally just have to wake up and put on my shoes.  I also leave everything I’ll need (phone, earbuds, towel, water, keys, etc.) all together in an easy to grab spot.  It’s a little nerdy, but I put my keys and earbuds in my jacket pocket, fill my water bottle and even untie/loosen the laces of my sneakers.  Not having to wrestle myself into clothes, pour water or fumble with my keys is a lifesaver at 5am.

2.)  My body has no fuel.  After not consuming anything at all for the past several hours, my body just doesn’t have the fuel it needs for a good workout.  I’m certainly not going to wake up an hour earlier to eat breakfast and then wait around while I digest.  So I used to just drink some water and go workout on an empty stomach.  I could get through a short workout okay, but with no food and no caffeine, I just didn’t have the energy to push myself very hard or long.

LIFESAVER!  I recently discovered these Pre-Workout Energizers by Vega.  I mix with water, drink and immediately leave for my workout.

I like Vega, as they’re a company focused on clean, plant-based nutrition.  Their sports products are focused on performance, but without the juiced-up, synthetic junk.  This energizer has stuff like organic sprouted brown rice syrup, green tea, yerba mate, coconut oil and rhodiola.  This video explains what’s in it and why.

3.) Cold, Stiff Muscles.  After laying in bed for the past I-wish-it-were-more hours, my muscles are cold and stiff.

Tip:  I always start slow to warm up my muscles at the beginning of an early morning workout.  If I’m running, I start off at a slow pace (even slower than my normally already-slow pace) and ease into pushing  myself harder.  If I’m doing weights, I start with at least 15-20 minutes of cardio on the treadmill or elliptical.  Warming up muscles is always important, but even more so first thing in the morning.
