Can I PLEASE enjoy Spring? A review of natural & herbal allergy remedies.

by James Lee,  Vitamin Mom Staff

Every Spring while kids are running to fill their Easter baskets with eggs,  I run to the drugstore and fill up my shopping basket with allergy medication.

I have had seasonal allergies for as long as I can remember, and each Spring, I become desperate just to breathe out of my nose.  To find some relief, I usually end up mixing three or four different over-the-counter allergy medications.

Spring is a busy season for me. This year I joined a men’s baseball league, I am a golfing enthusiasts, and I proudly serve my country in the Georgia Army National Guard. All of these activities require me to be outside for long periods of time and I really wanted to find a way to minimize my allergy symptoms in a natural and homeopathic way. Especially after this year’s harsh winter – I was definitely looking forward to enjoying the sun and the outdoor activities that come with Spring Fever.

Here in the Southeast, pollen season hits hard around the month of March and April. In 2013 and 2014 the pollen counts were the highest in April as you can see below: Image

Time to bring in my All-Star Lineup.

My symptoms: (greatest to least)

  • Nasal Congestion
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy Eyes

Aller-7 Support with Quercetin, MSM and Stinging Nettles – 90 Tablets Supports normal respiratory function in the presence of airborne allergens.

Ingredients: Quercetin is an flavonoid (plant pigment) commonly found in fruits and vegetables, especially onions, citrus, and apples.

  • When your respiratory system is irritated, redness and swelling can result from the release of histamines, and quercetin has been reported to have an antihistamine effect. This can often provide relief for watery eyes, runny nose, and swelling in the face.
  • Numerous studies and lab models have suggested that quercetin may offer a bronchial dilating effect. Quercetin caused a relaxation of the airway smooth muscle, leading researchers to suggest it may offer therapeutic solutions for persons suffering from upper respiratory conditions.

MSM is an organic sulfur compound that’s naturally derived during the earth’s rain cycle.

  • One of the most important features of MSM is that it makes your cells more permeable.  This means that it allows toxins and metabolic waste products to easily be moved out of the cells, while essential nutrients and hydration can be moved in.
  • MSM increases the ability of the body to eliminate waste products at the cellular level.  This speeds recovery and frees up more energy for rebuilding.
  •  Digestion is the biggest energy requirement of the body (Approximately 70-80% of your energy is spent on digestion each day). MSM increases the absorption of nutrients so that the energy expenditure on digestion is vastly reduced.  This results in more energy being redirected towards activity and necessary healing.
  • MSM is a powerful anti-inflammatory due to its ability to allow metabolic wastes to be removed from the cells.

Stinging Nettles is one of natures best nutraceuticals, containing protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, beta-carotene, along with vitamins A,C, D, and B complex, all in a form that is easy for the body to use.

  • Stinging nettle contains natural antihistamines and anti-inflammatories (including quercetin), that open up constricted bronchial and nasal passages, helping to ease hay fever, and nose & sinus type allergy symptoms.
  • One preliminary human study suggested that nettle capsules helped reduce sneezing and itching in people with hay fever. Researchers think that may be due to nettle’s ability to reduce the amount of histamine the body produces in response to an allergen.

Sinu Orega Nasal Spray  SinuOrega combines a unique blend of the powerful essential oils of sage, bay leaf, clove, and oregano in a wild, purified sea salt-water base. Health practitioners agree: a saline-based nasal wash is the best approach for cleansing the nasal passages as well as sinuses. All natural and safe for everyday use. Ingredients: Emulsified oils of wild oregano, bay leaf, sage, and clove in a sea salt base.

  • Oregano Oil- The best known benefit of oregano is its microbial killing powers. Oil of oregano is the premier natural antiseptic.
  • Bay Leaf- Natural Antiseptic, helps relax the nasal tract.
  • Sage- It is a powerful antioxidant.
  • Clove- It helps relieve pain.
  • Pure Sea Salt in Spring Water- It loosens mucus in nasal passage and moistens the nose.

Rohto V Eye Drops

  • Relieves redness of the eye due to minor eye irritations
  • Temporarily relieves burning and irritation due to dryness of the eye

I use this brand of eye drops purely for the menthol in it. The menthol in Rohto V provides a cool, slightly burning sensation in my eyes that I like. If you do not like a burning sensation in your eyes then I do not recommend using this product.

No more turbo sneezes!

Overall I was happy with the results of my My All-Start Lineup. I could tell the Aller-7 Support was working when I had the urges to sneeze. I felt like I was going to sneeze on many different occasions but the antihistamines in the ingredients were inhibiting my body from sneezing.

Usually during pollen season, my sneezes are violent and very frequent. I usually have chest pains and migraines after these sneeze attacks. I did sneeze a few times this month but never had violent or frequent sneezes. What a relief!

Take a deep breath…

The Sinu Orega was a great tool for the stuffiness in my nose. When you spray it in your nose there is a little stinging sensation from the sea salt, but other than that you smell the aromatics of the clove, sage, and oregano.
After spraying, it usually takes a few minutes for the ingredients to start working. But once I sprayed and blew my nose, I instantly noticed the thick mucous built up in my nose was broken down and became runny. This helped a lot before my baseball games where I was constantly running, and needed to breathe heavily.

No more itchy, watery eyes

My eyes were never red or itchy this pollen season. My friends recommended that I use Rohto V for the cooling effect it gives off.  The menthol in the eye drops gives a cooling sensation, which I thought was the greatest thing ever. However, I would not recommend this to anyone if they do not like a slight burning sensation in their eyes.

In total I spent around $40 for the month of April on these three products. I usually end up paying around $100+ each year for the big name over-the-counter drugs.

I found my All-Star Lineup that I will stick to every April, and I hope everyone who suffers like me will find what works for them.

Now I guess it’s time to find the best sunblock for the summertime!
