DreamBody Inside & Out: Probiotics

Summer is almost here, and many of us become increasingly self-concious of wearing swimsuits in public (!)  You too?  So you’ve decided to get into shape?  Great!

But as you set your new fitness goals, Vitamin Mom encourages you to take a healthy, whole-body approach.  It’s not just about how you look from the outside.  It’s taking care of your “insides” too – your digestion, cardio-vascular and immune systems.

Our friends at DreamBody, Inc. are the ultimate in fitness and nutrition.   Jason Carver at DreamBody is a Certified Master Personal Trainer and Boot Camp Director in Atlanta, GA.  He holds a B.S. in Exercise & Health Science and is a Certified Nutritional Counselor with 10 years of professional experience.  Here’s a picture of him at a recent competition:

Talk about DreamBody, huh?  Here’s what Jason told me after his competition:

Nutrition is KEY to obtaining new goals”.

He’s very conscious of his whole body – making sure his food and nutritional supplements are clean and healthy.  Here’s an informative article by Jason about Probiotics.

What is a probiotic?

We are starting to hear more about it like a new fad buzz word, but how do we explain what it is?

Well it’s quite simple. It can be explained as good bacterium that provides health benefits to the host by regulating and balancing intestinal function. Of course that definition can be expanded but there isn’t much else that someone would care to understand.

Unfortunately probiotics still aren’t a go to source of healing for most people. Usually people desire the exact opposite in the form of antibiotics which can kill off all good and bad bacteria just so we can “feel” better.

But that’s not the solution.  We need to train ourselves have our bodies use it’s own defenses so that we can get well and stay well.

Ever notice that people taking antibiotics seem to take them often, or say they need them often? That’s because as a whole their body has become sick and defenseless.

The Digestive System

  • When we look at our body’s’ systems, we have a tendency to think first about our circulatory system and then our respiratory system and then lastly the digestive system. I believe we need to begin to work our way backwards and start with the digestive system.
  • What do we do every single day to keep ourselves alive, healthy and active? Eat of course! So doesn’t it make sense that what’s going into our bodies can either make us sick or heal us?
  • The digestive system begins in the mouth. goes to the esophagus, the stomach, the small intestines, the large intestines, the colon and then out the anus. All during that time things are happening – food is being broken down, nutrients are being absorbed, pathogens are being destroyed, waste is being developed and eliminated.
  • But here’s what’s happened… we’ve removed ourselves from foods we are biologically adapted to eat. We are now putting foods into our bodies that our system is using nutrients to break down but not being replenished. Over time the gut lining is being destroyed, not allowing our bodies to adequately absorb the nutrients we do take in. What happens after that? Well, the blood and other organs aren’t receiving what THEY need to be healthy – and before you know it, liver failure, heart failure, skin disease, etc.

Health Benefits include:

  • Treatment for IBS (Irritable bowel syndrome)
  • Brain Function
  • Blood Pressure
  • Gut Healing
  • Nutritional absorption because of gut healing
  • Inflammatory diseases such as psoriasis, possibly even disease such as lupus
  • And the list can go on and on…

What to look for when choosing a probiotics supplement:

  • The bacteria strains in the product must be able to survive your stomach acid and bile, so that they reach your intestines alive in adequate numbers.
  • The bacteria strains must have health-promoting features.
  • The probiotic activity must be guaranteed throughout the entire production process, storage period and shelf life of the product.
